Background Information

Tandag City Division is a newly created division in the province of Surigao del Sur by virtue of Republic Act 9392.  It was officially separated from Surigao del Sur Division when it was formally  launched on August 6, 2013. It is the 2nd legislated city division in Surigao del Sur comprising of Five (5) public secondary schools Twenty-Six (26) elementary schools,  and  Eight (8) private schools.

During the first year of its operation, the designated division office personnel manned and ran the infant division from a borrowed room in one of the buildings of Jacinto P. Elpa National High School located in Capitol Hills, Telaje, Tandag City.

The division office was then headed by the concurrent Schools Division Superintendent Dr.Teofila G. Cabatuan, who was also the SDS of Surigao del Sur division. Since it has no Notice of Staffing and Compensation Action (NOSCA) yet, the programs, projects and activities of the division office were undertaken by the designated coordinators who, at the same time were school heads and or key personnel in their respective schools. Considering the dual functions of these personnel, they were allowed to report to the division office twice a week only to give just and fair services to their clientele.

On September 18, 2014 by virtue of the Notice of Occupancy issued to DepEd Tandag City by Hon. Roxanne C. Pimentel, City Mayor, the division office was transferred to the second floor of the old Municipal Hall of Tandag which was vacated by the Executive Office and other functional units of the city government. The notice was a welcome relief for the division personnel to be transferred temporarily to a more spacious and convenient building.  During that time, Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) was the only fund released to the city division and it is still attached to the budget of the mother division. Dr.Teofila G. Cabatuan continued to manage the two divisions for more than a year until she turned-over the office of the superintendent to her successor early in 2015.

With the assignment of Dr. Gregoria T. Su in the division of Tandag City as its new superintendent on January 5, 2015, changes become more evident and milestones and strategic directions were being laid down on the table.

The advent of year 2015 brought many challenges to the newly created division. However, these challenges were successfully hurdled because of the concerted efforts of all concerned. In fact, on January 19, 2015 Tandag City division was the first division being released with its Notice of Staffing and Compensation Action (NOSCA) by the Department of Budget and Management through the initiative of the new superintendent, Dr. Su. Another breakthrough followed with the separation of plantilla from its mother division in February, 2015.

Tandag City Division is now fully equipped with human resources as it was able to hire complete personnel under rationalization plan in September 2015. Therefore, all financial transactions are now being taken cared of by the division office.

Meanwhile, the dream to have a building of its own was beginning to be realized when the division office acquired a piece of land donated by the city government through Mayor Roxanne C. Pimentel,  fueled with the desire to have finally  a home to call its own,  the division office wasted no time in  submitting the proposed design for its building with the corresponding program of works to the central office for funding. Finally, in 2016, the Tandag City Division office, a two-storey building sitting on a 1,388 sq. meter  lot in Purok Narra, Mabua, Tandag City stood proud – a testament to the indefatigable spirit of its leaders. It was formally inaugurated   on July 5, 2019.

In October 24, 2019, Dr. Imelda N. Sabornido was installed as the third Schools Division Superintendent with Dr. Segundino Madjos, Jr. as the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent. With Dr. Sabornido at the helm, significant reforms and projects were undertaken. However, her stay in the city division was only short lived. After less than two years, she turned-over the responsibilities of Schools Division Superintendent to Dr. Gemma A. De Paz in January 25, 2021. Dr. Rita Reyes also took the post vacated by ASDS Madjos.

At present, Tandag City Division keeps soaring high to greater heights as it continues to mold the minds of its learners, guided by its motto, “Teaching the minds, touching the hearts and transforming the lives of Tandaganons”.

With the dynamic leadership of the current leaders, Tandag City division will always be one of the best performing divisions in Caraga Region.
